Bridges to College & Careers

Welcome to the Hawthorne Adult Education Center's Bridges to Careers program. Through this pathway program, students will receive career training and gain academic skills for a successful future for employment and/or college.

Courses are offered at a variety of daytime hours. These courses will be offered twice a year online, and twice a year in person. Hawthorne has an agreement with Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) to recognize many of these course experiences. These agreements allow students to experience the rigor of college without using financial aid. These career pathways have academic and other support services to help students be successful.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Pathway

This free 11 week program includes 3 courses:

  • Career Pathways for Healthcare

  • Medical Terminology or CNA Exam Preparation

  • Minnesota State Certified Nursing Assistant Course & CPR

These courses will guide you through preparing and passing the Minnesota CNA exam, career exploration, building an employment portfolio, and navigation into employment or college. After completion of these courses, 7 credits will be recognized by Rochester Community Technical College (RCTC).

Minimum reading requirements are needed for the Bridges to Careers pathway programs. Reading courses are available. 

Advanced Hospital Nursing Assistant Certificate

After completing the Certified Nursing Assistant pathway courses, students have the option to continue for the Advanced Hospital Nursing Assistant certificate which is started at Hawthorne and competed at Rochester Community & Technical College (RCTC). An RCTC Transition Advisor is located at Hawthorne and will assist students with the transition to the college. Completion of the certificate can be a career ladder to the following careers:

  • Patient Care Assistant (PCA)

  • Clinical Hemodialysis Tech

  • Urology Tech

  • Endoscopy Tech 1

  • Sterile Processing Tech

  • Practical Nursing (LPN)

  • Associate Nursing (2 year RN)

Phlebotomy Preparation Program

This free preparation program includes the following courses:

  • Career Pathways for Health Care

  • Medical Terminology

  • Computer Prep for College

  • Minnesota State Certified Nursing Assistant Course (recommended if you have no previous health care experience)

  • CPR

  • Reading for College & Careers II (you can test out of this course)

After completion of this pathway, students will receive a transcript to be used for application to the Mayo School of Health Sciences. Students also receive support and guidance from a Career Navigator when applying for the Phlebotomy program.

Minimum reading requirements are needed for the Bridges to Careers pathway programs. Reading courses are available.

Pharmacy Tech Preparation Program

This free preparation program includes the following courses:

  • Career Pathways for Health Care

  • Medical Terminology

  • Computer Prep for College

  • Math for College and Careers II (you can test out of this course)

  • Reading for College and Careers II (you can test out of this course)

After completion of this pathway, students will receive a transcript to be used for application to the Mayo School of Health Sciences. Students also receive support and guidance from a Career Navigator when applying for the Pharmacy Tech program.

Office Support Specialist

This free preparation program includes the following courses:

  • Northstar Computer Digital Certificate (Industry standard for computer skills)

  • National Retail Federation in Customer Service

  • Career Pathways for Administrative Office Professionals

  • Keyboarding

  • Math for Office Professional

  • Reading and Writing for College and Careers II (you can test out of this course)

After completion of this pathway, students will receive the Office Support Specialist Certificate through Hawthorne. A Career Navigator will help students with building an employment portfolio, and navigation into employment or college.

Minimum reading requirements are needed for the Bridges to Careers pathway programs. Reading courses are available. 

Health Care Office Professional Certificate and Administrative Office Professional Diploma

After completing the Office Support Specialist pathway courses, students have the option to continue for the Health Care Office Professional Certificate, or the Administrative Office Professional Diploma. Both these pathway careers are started at Hawthorne and completed at Rochester Community & Technical Colllege (RCTC). An RCTC Transition Advisor is located at Hawthorne and will assist students with the transition to the college.

Start your college career at Hawthorne! Hawthorne has an agreement with Rochester Community & Technical College (RCTC) to recognize these course experiences. These free courses will be fully recognized by RCTC. Get a jump start on your college career today!

  • Math for College & Careers I & II

  • Transition to College & Intro to D2L

These additional career opportunities are offered through a partnership with other Minnesota Adult Basic Education programs. These courses are online and are offered for free

  • Paraprofessional Test Preparation (ParaPro)

  • Community Interpreter Training
